Holding detail in the shadows is something that photographers are frequently encouraged to do. And while that may be important for some shots, it's not a rule that needs to be applied to every photograph. Indeed, there is much that can be gained in terms of dramatic impact, mystery and depth by purposefully pushing the image into the darker realms of the tonal scale.
For this image I was seduced by the power of the Dark Side...

The darker version, rendered is rich, monochromatic brown tones, is the more intriguing image. The original scene that was photographed serves as a beginning, a point of departure, a sketch for later creative interpretation. Once I began working with this photograph it suggested a different story than what was recorded by the camera. Discovering those different stories that are present within photographs is one aspect of my own creative process.
